Born
in Castello, Celestino Celestini died in Florence, where he had studied with
Giovanni Fattori. He was an
etching instructor at the Florence Academy of Fine Arts. His etching and aquatints are in the
British Museum, the Gabinetto
delle Stampe di Parigi, and the Galleria d’Arte Moderna of Florence. Best known for his etchings of the
Umbria, Tuscany and Lazio (Latium) regions of Italy, he also taught landscape
architecture at the University of Florence. In a restrained Modernist style,
his etchings carry dramatic impact, and were generally produced in editions of
only 50. He received numerous
prizes during his career. In his
honor, his gravestone carries the legend, “Etcher of Italy”.
